It is one of the best known chili peppers by Brazilians, who mainly consume it pickled. Malagueta comes from the Amazon Basin. Besides being widely produced in Brazil, it is also cultivated in Portugal, Africa and Asia. The crew members who accompanied Christopher Columbus on his expedition first came into contact with this delicacy. The name malagueta was previously given to Pimenta da Guiné, which today is no longer used in cooking.
