The guaraná fruit has been known to the Indians in the Amazon region for centuries. Originally, the peeled and dried seeds were ground into a light brown powder, floated in water and drunk sweetened with honey. Today, guaraná accounts for over a quarter of all soft drinks sold in Brazil (the third largest soft drink market in the world).
